★★★★ (4/5) Stars!

For twenty-three years, Cross Carlson was a playboy. You know the type. Tall, dark, and wealthy. Blue-eyed. Charming. He seemed to have it all so easy. But Cross was harboring a terrible secret - one that helped ruin the life of an innocent girl and almost ended his own.

Finally out of the hospital, Cross is flailing, scarred in both body and mind and stifled by the weight of the secret he still keeps. The only way to absolution lies in a Mexican convent, and going there could cost him everything.

If there's anyone who knows what it's like to screw up big time, it's Meredith Kinsey. Just a few years ago, Merri was an ordinary girl with a job at her college newspaper and white picket fence kind of dreams. Now she's holed up in a Mexican convent, hiding from a drug lord who thinks he owns her.

What happens when the only way out of hell is with the son of the man who put you there? They say love conquers all, but does it really?

My Review:

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

So I read Selling Scarlett the other day while I was waiting for my Taming Cross ARC to arrive, to sort of get myself ready to jump into it when I finally got it in my Kindle. And while I enjoyed it...enough. I wasn't about to do cartwheels and go fangirl crazy over it. Most of the characters just weren't that likable. To me. But one thing I knew for sure was, even as brief as his appearances were in Selling Scarlett, I adored Cross. So I was torn between excitement and worry. I really wanted more Cross. I wanted to know more about him. Though the first book nearly fell flat for me, so what did that mean for Taming Cross? Was there any hope? I would have to say most definitely yes!

Taming Cross is told in the dual POVs of Cross and Merri. Which was a pleasant surprise because I thought I knew what was going to happen with Cross from the last bit of Selling Scarlett, I think it's part of what had made me a bit nervous to read this. It seemed like Suri, one of his best friends, might be the love interest and, to be perfectly honest, I didn't really like or connect with her very well and I wanted something different for Cross. Thankfully I got that.

I was already intrigued with Cross when I started this one, but while reading it and getting to know his character deeper, he absolutely stole my heart and made me really feel for him. He's such a broken guy. In both his body from his wreck and in his soul from his past and family life. You honestly cannot read this book and not fall in love with him. He's at a very low point in the beginning. He can't do the job that he loves, the girl he had developed feelings for, one of his best friends, is engaged to someone he doesn't like, the other best friend has developed feelings for him that he doesn't return and his parents are complete assholes who didn't even go see him in the hospital for the couple months he was in a coma because what was the point? Nice right? Yeah, if there was ever I time I wanted to reach into a book and strangle someone I would be adding them to my list!

I loved getting to know Merri as well. She's nothing like I expected her to be. We know very little about her from Selling Scarlett. Mostly the fact that she was one of the first missing escorts who was sold as a sex slave down in Mexico to a druglord. She was targeted for specific reasons that, in a way, connect to Cross. Merri was so sweet and strong and positive. She had a lot going for her and got involved with the wrong guy in college and it was one of those little mistakes that set off a chain of bad choices that landed her in Mexico. It wasn't like she was a horrible person she just put her trust in all the wrong people.

When Cross makes the decision to go down to Mexico to find and rescue Merri, that's when everything gets crazy. I was on the edge of my seat, anxiously turning page after page while these two fought their way to freedom and into each other's hearts. It was dangerous and exciting and heartbreaking all at the same time. I can't really say much else without spoiling things. Definitely the best addition to the Love Inc series and everything I'd expect from Ella James. I highly recommend you meet Cross and Merri.

Excerpt:

I pull away from him, and I can feel myself blushing. There should be another word for this.  One that more resembles burning.

With my hands dangling at my sides where they belong, I glance up at him, feeling like the old-school, mid-20th Century definition of the histrionic woman.

I mean, it's not like we're good friends or anything. What logical reason do I have to be this worked up over Evan's quality of life?

I get the nerve to peek at him, and I confirm I'm right: He looks edgy. Uncomfortable. Like I've crossed a line.

He shifts his feet, like he wants to step away, but instead of doing that, he looks into my eyes for a few long seconds. The depth of his stare actually makes me shiver; I get the feeling he's trying to find something there. I'm doing the same thing, but whatever I see in the depths of his blue eyes feels nameless.

A second later, he thumbs a tear off my cheek, his perfect lips pressing together in a sad, resigned kind of look. “Don't cry for me, Meredith. I'm doing fine.”

I nod, feeling a glow all over my body because I'm standing so close to him.

I want to touch him. For this reason, I make myself take a small step back, tilting my head up more to meet his eyes. “I'm sorry for going all emo on you.”

The grave look on his face slips, and for a second I see something else—something vulnerable in his beautiful features. It's gone the next second, replaced by something stoic and untouchable.

I back away a little more and he lifts his hand, like he wants to touch me. Instead he just holds it there, palm out: the classic symbol meaning ‘stop’.

That's what you should do, dummy. Just stop this. You're living in a fantasy.

Evan seems to be searching for something to say. His eyes, on me, burn. I swallow and he tilts his head a little, looking unhappily perplexed. “I didn't deserve what you did for me, but I appreciate it.” He looks me over, head to toe. “You're a good person, Meredith Kinsey.”

Before I can respond, he lowers his hand and turns to go back to the table. He glances at me over his shoulder as he moves, and when he sits down, he bites into a piece of sausage. I move back behind the island and force myself to be calm, the way I would be if one of my children got hurt and I didn't want to alarm them. I force my mannerisms to remain gentle and unhurried as I eat my own breakfast, but internally, I'm going a million miles an hour.

I feel mortified. Desperate. Hungry. The feeling is familiar, and from long ago: It reminds me of the way I felt about Sam, the assistant band director. My first full-on crush.

I pour myself a glass of water and sigh, because how typical is that? Will I always be the blushing girl with the inappropriate crush?

Well, I guess I’m not blushing anymore, that’s for sure, but this guy is very much off limits.

Not because of all the many obvious things, but because of my secret. The one he doesn't know—and I won't tell him. The one that’s the likeliest of all my baggage to reach across time and distance and end me.

What I should tell him is that I'm not the kind of person he thinks. I probably never was, but I'm definitely not now.

THE FINAL BOOK IN ELLA JAMES' BESTSELLING STAINED SERIES:

Ripped apart by the betrayals of two friends and ensnared by Celestial captors, Julia and Cayne are poised to fulfill their sacrificial role in The Three’s return to power. Their Chosen friends will move Hell and Earth to win their freedom, but how will they fight fate when a powerful deity gets the upper hand?

The net will come down.

Someone will be sacrificed.

A dear friend will die.

And a Celestial battle will play out on Earth, with everything—and everyone—at stake.

Most endings are bittersweet for me. I mean, I've done it! I've finally made it to the end and now I understand everything that's been going on. All those great things that give you sort of a book high and leave you with a smile. It's amazing right? Then there's the other side. The realization that...I don't get to hang out with these characters anymore. Their story is done for me. Instant deflation. I mean I can always reread them, which I do trust me. But it's not nearly the same when you're not discovering new things.

Out of the entire Stained series I think that Exalted is my favorite book. It's quite a bit darker than the others in my opinion. Death, painful battles, etc.  It's also more intense and well, except for people you grow attached to dying, I feel like this book ended the series beautifully. Endings are always scary. What if it's not how you picture it? I've put in all this time and what if I feel let down? There was no let down. Okay yeah once again some deaths were hard but you can't expect everyone to make it through when you're going through an apocalyptic type war. The very end of this book was just so intense, so on the edge of my seat. I swear I think I held my breath a time or two. And then the Epilogue. TEARS! Love, love, loved it.

Ella James is such an amazing Indie author if you haven't yet already, you really must go download the first book Stained... it's free so what are you waiting for. Get started on this great series it's very worth it.

Determined not to return to the frightening Chosen leaders and desperate to escape her fate, Julia and her friends journey to the Swiss Alps, home of a rogue Chosen group.

In this snowy haven, all hell breaks loose. Someone is traitor. Someone changes sides. A new romance blossoms. An old romance is doomed. And The Three will stop at nothing to recover their weapon.

I swear to you, Ella James could teach a class in the art of cliffhangers!! She gives us another mind spinning, action packed addition to the Stained series and it just keeps getting better book after book. I honestly still don't know who to believe in. The only people I believe in for sure are Julia and Cayne. And maybe Mer and Drew...but with the way things twist and turn who knows.

Julia and the crew, after finally starting to relax and thinking they were within a safe haven amongst a rogue group of Chosen, are of course betrayed. I still can't figure out who did it!! There are some seemingly obviously choices, yet at least one of them has cast just enough of a shadow of doubt that I think maybe they're innocent, which I kind of hope is the case.

I can't wait to sit down and start the final book and see how everything comes together in end. Such a good adrenaline pumping series that really keeps you guessing!

REVIEW: Stolen (Stained Series #2) by Ella James

Title/Series: Stolen | Stained #2

With Cayne's fate in the hands of his enemies and Julia spirited away to the covert Stained compound, the two are separated by impenetrable walls and a gulf of unanswered questions. Soon Julia learns the truth about the Stained and the plans they have for her, the compound is attacked, and a new group is running from an unwanted destiny, searching the globe in pursuit of the knowledge that just might save them all.

This second book in the Stained series definitely does not disappoint! Julia goes through so much and I really felt for her. I mean who do you trust? She finds others like her. But...they kidnapped her. Brought her to a compound that she's not allowed to leave. They won't answer many questions because information is on a "need to know" basis and has all the makings of some crazy cult. And then there's Cayne. Whom she loves very much, yet he spent nearly 200 years killing those of her kind. But it's what he was taught, what he was told he was born to do. She wages a heartbreaking inner battle about her feelings for Cayne now that she knows the full truth about his murderous past.

Some new and fun characters were introduced. Meredith I adore. She's quirky and very entertaining. One of those people that you wish you had a friend like them! Drew is great too. I was so glad he was by Julia's side. And then there's Nathan...I'm not sure how I feel about him. I really want to like him and trust him and I feel like maybe he could be one of those people you hear about who grow up in a cult and so it's all they know and he's trying so hard to be what they expect of him. I'm hoping that deep down there's more to him and he'll know he's wrong...I guess he's just one of those people I see there's a glimmer of good in and hope that I turn out right. We'll see!

Cliffhangers! Oh man Ms. James is seriously the master of a good cliffhanger. When you get to the very last line of this book, you're gonna be thinking "WHAT?!?!" At least that's how I was lol! Thankfully I have the last 2 books so I can now go jump in and find out what happens next.  Excellent series so far!

After a fire destroys 17-year-old Julia's home and kills her foster parents, she chases the half-demon responsible across the country and back, determined to avenge her family and discover why a host of celestial baddies want her dead. With Julia is enigmatic hottie Cayne, who has his own score to settle with the half-demon, and who might be just as dangerous as the creature he and Julia hunt.

I originally downloaded this mistaking it as the start of a completely different series. So it's been sitting in my NOOK for about 3, maybe 4 months. The other day I was trying to find something to read and, the summary grabbed my attention enough that I finally pulled this up from my library and figured what the heck! I was sucked in immediately. It wasn't at all what I expected and I'm so glad I made that "mistake" so many months back.

At times Julia and Cayne were sort of cheesy and silly in how they spoke or acted towards one another, but it was in a cute way. I was a bit shocked at first by Julia's almost blind trust of Cayne so early on in the book. I mean he told her nothing, not about her, her birthmark, anything he knew...and treated her like the bait he was using her for. He was so frustrating !! But eventually as they got closer I kinda got it. Because I sort of have a little book crush on Cayne <3 And even as she found out more and more of his story and the secrets of his past she remained trusting and her feelings didn't waver. Even with him at his darkest. She almost seemed more determined.

It's filled with lots of action, a bit of mystery and just the right splash of love. And if any of that doesn't satisfy you... it's FREE!! How can you go wrong? I just finished it and I'm already going crazy to get the other books in a couple weeks. Excellent start of a series! :)
