Some loves will last ’til your dying breath

Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.

Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.

Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…

I have to make a confession. I feel like I have committed a huge, bookish cardinal sin. Maybe I should explain the reason before I just blurt it out. See this book has been weighing on me. The whole Roth versus Zayne thing has had me more freaked out than normal to finish a series. I love a good love triangle but this one is so different because I was not putting my trust in the author to make a decision on how this would turn out, I was putting it in my peers. That's a tough pill to swallow! And if I'm being honest...had I known that before I ever read the first book...I might have never started this series in the first place which sucks to even think about. This whole thing is the reason that, even though I pre-ordered Every Last Breath and received it on release day, I waited until now to finally stop procrastinating and just finish the series.

I was only about 15-20 pages in but I just couldn't put my heart into it. It wasn't holding my attention. My brain just kept going Zayne? Roth? Zayne? Roth? Zayne? Roth? It just wouldn't stop! I needed to know so I could quiet my head and embrace this book fully. I knew deep down that either way it went, no matter what would happen with my ship I would be able to finish the book in peace if only I knew.

Sigh.

I stopped where I was...and read the last page before I went on.

I know! I feel so wrong saying it! Unclean. But you know what? It worked.

Okay. Enough of being silly. I really won't be able to say a whole lot about this book since it's the final book in a series so it's hard to come up with a lot to say that wouldn't be spoiler-ish in any way. Even though on the inside my heart is screaming all of the things that it wants me to talk about.

Once I finally got into it this book was really hard to put down. It's been a while since I finished the previous books so I was worried going in that I'd feel a bit lost without going back and rereading. But it didn't take long before I fell back into this world easily and everything came rushing back.

What I love about JLA's books is that she knows how to write a really strong and ass kicking heroine. Layla is no exception. I feel like this final book is where I loved her character the most. She had so much weighing on her throughout the entire book and I loved how even though she was scared on the inside, outwardly she rarely let that show and she had her head on straight when I feel like the average person would crack under everything that was on her shoulders and in her mind.

The other thing I love about her books is her boys. She writes the boys that you instantly fall for, the ones who even when they're being cocky as all hell make you want to smile and sigh and make you fall even harder. Roth and Zayne are both perfect examples. They both have such good qualities to them that deep down I knew that however it went I could've been happy. Though I did have my hopes set a wee bit higher on one side before going in. But that's all I'm going to say about that.

It's difficult to really try to think of anything else to say. I mean there's a million things I'd love to go on and on and on about but this review would end up way too long and...you people who haven't read this one yet would end up hating me for saying to much. So I'll just leave it at this.

This book, heck this whole series, had everything I've come to expect from Jennifer L. Armentrout. An ass kicking, badass heroine. Swoon worthy guys you'll lose your heart over. Hilarious banter and laugh out loud moments. It filled me up with so many different emotions. One minute I'd be laughing so hard and the next my heart's being ripped out of my chest. You really feel everything when you step into one of her worlds and I couldn't have asked for a better conclusion.

SCORCHED Synopsis:

Sometimes life leaves a mark…

Most days, Andrea doesn’t know whether she wants to kiss Tanner or punch him in the gut. He is seriously hot, with legit bedroom eyes and that firefighter body of his, but he’s a major player, and they can’t get along for more than a handful of minutes. Until now.

Tanner knows he and Andrea have had an epic love/hate relationship for as long as he can remember, but he wants more love than hate from her. He wants her. Now. Tomorrow. But the more he gets to know her, the more it becomes obvious that Andrea has a problem. She’s teetering on the edge and every time he tries to catch her, she slips through his fingers.

Andrea’s life is spiraling out of control, and it doesn’t matter that Tanner wants to save her, because when everything falls apart and she’s speeding toward rock bottom, only she can save herself.

Sometimes life makes you work for that happily ever after…

Praise for SCORCHED:

“Armentrout’s latest new adult offering tackles substance abuse and mental illness — and, thankfully, the love of a good man is not going to be what heals this heroine.” – RT Book Reviews

Portrait of a pretty teenage girl with redhaircovering her face with her hands

Excerpt:

Tanner
              Aw, shit.
I watched Andrea walk into the living room, the normal twitch of her hips absent. No one swayed ass like Andrea, and seeing it gone from her step was answer enough. Our normal whatever-the-fuck-it-was between us had gone further than I intended. No doubt what I’d said had cut her, but shit, it was no different than any other day.
My hand tightened on the neck of the bottle. For the life of me, I had no idea what the hell Andrea Walters’s problem was. Honestly. No fucking clue. One minute, sweet and sugary words parted those pouty pink lips of hers. Next second, she was a fire-breathing dragon from hell—a hot, fire-breathing dragon, but still. Her moods flipped more quickly than cups did during a game of flip cup.
Maybe it was because she was a redhead?
              I smirked.
She’d always been this way with me, and the most fucked-up think about it, there was a part of me that actually looked forward to whatever was going to come out of her mouth. Twisted as fuck. It was like a game between us, to see who could hit the hardest without lifting a finger. If nothing else, it was damn entertaining—or at least, it had been until now. Now, I wasn’t too sure about it.
Those pretty doe eyes of hers had looked suspiciously damp right before she’d looked away, and yeah…that didn’t sit right with me.
Kyler shot me a look as he walked past me and grabbed a beer out of the fridge, but I watched Andrea sit on the edge of the couch, her posture unnaturally rigid.
Sydney leaned against the arm. “We’re thinking about leaving early in the morning, around six.”
My gaze flicked to Andrea, expecting her to make some kind of crack about not getting up that early, but she was abnormally quiet. My spine stiffened.
“That should put us at the cabin between nine and ten in the morning, depending on traffic.” Kyler stood beside me as he screwed off the cap. “Then we’ll be heading back the following Monday.”
“Sounds good to me.” I didn’t take my eyes off Andrea as she fiddled with a strap on her sandals, slipping them onto her feet.
Sydney glanced at me, smiling softly. “You’re definitely off from the fire department?”
I nodded. Kyler had mentioned weeks ago about wanting to hit up the cabin before everyone headed back to class, and I’d requested the time off then. Which had meant I’d pulled a lot of doubles, but I hadn’t minded it. Wasn’t too different from the twelve-hour shifts we worked in the first place, and I’d only be there until February of next year, and then I was off to the academy. Not that I was in any hurry to leave the fire department, but being a cop was in my blood. Except I wanted to be a good cop. I’d probably still volunteer at the fire hall once I knew what kind of schedule I was looking at on the force.
“It makes sense if we drive up together.” Sydney toyed with a strand of her hair. “Kyler and I can pick you two up.”
Andrea had twisted toward Sydney and started to protest the whole idea of taking one car. I zoned out, staring at her as the bottle of beer dangled from the tips of my fingers.
Damn…she was a cute girl. Nah, she was more than cute, and it wasn’t like this was the first time I’d noticed that. From the first time I’d seen her at the bar with Sydney, she’d done more than just poke my interest. Hell, anyone with eyes knew she was a very pretty girl. Lush lips. Freckled cheeks and thick, dark eyelashes. Come to think of it, she reminded me of a girl I’d had a crush on in middle school. Hell, couldn’t remember that chick’s name, but she’d had freckles and red hair. I think I used to pull on her braids or some annoying shit like that. My lips tipped up in a small grin as I lifted the bottle to my mouth. Andrea was a motherfucking firecracker, though, not the kind of girl who was easily tamed.
Hell, not the kind of girl you even wanted to tame.

And don’t miss the first standalone book in the series…

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy's deal might be, but it's a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

It's a beautiful day for a war.

As the mortal world slowly slips into chaos of the godly kind, Alexandria Andros must overcome a stunning defeat that has left her shaken and in doubt of their ability to end this war once and for all.

And with all the obstacles between Alex and her happily-ever-after with the swoonworthy Aiden St. Delphi, they must now trust a deadly foe as they travel deep into the Underworld to release one of the most dangerous gods of all time.

In the stunning, action-packed climax to the bestselling Covenant series, Alex must face a terrible choice: the destruction of everything and everyone she holds dear… or the end of herself.

I honestly do not think that I will ever be able to think of this book and not have at least a few tears build up in my eyes. It was heart wrenching and really packed a punch in the feels. But it was also beautiful and amazing and I am just so full of emotions. I'm not ready to be back in the real world right now, where these characters and these places don't actually exist. I just want to crawl back into my mind and wrap myself up in everything Covenant and stay there for a while. I hate...hate saying goodbye to such an amazing series. But since I have to, all I can say is Sentinel was the most amazing and perfect sendoff there could have been. There isn't an ounce of disappointment in me. I have never truly been as happy with how a series ended. Ever.
The closest furie's smile was edged with unimaginable cruelty. "The gods have heard Apollo's pleas and have responded."
The thing that will always have me turning to a JLA book without question or hesitation is the fact that she excels at both world building and character creation. When you're in the moment and you're reading one of her books everything feels so real. Like how it was reading this series for me, I felt like at any second Apollo could just pop up beside me and scare the ever loving crap out of me. I know, wishful thinking. But you know what I mean right? She has that thing... that spark, that really pulls you into her stories and allows you to feel and see everything.
"Do you know what I think about when it's quiet, Alex? I think about all the bad things I've done."
I was all over the place through this series when it came to my feelings on Seth. I started out on the first two books being 100% Team Seth. Sure, he was cocky. Like cocky to the point that you'd find yourself thinking, "if he opens his mouth one more time...I'm gonna hit him!" But still there was just something about him that I gravitated towards from the moment he first came around. By the time I finished Deity my feelings were reversed and found myself instead wishing horrible things would happen to him. In a lot of ways he broke my heart and I wasn't sure if it would be possible to like his character again. So imagine my surprise to find myself reading Sentinel and finding some redeemable qualities in him and feeling like maybe there is hope for Seth after all. He still did a lot of horrible things and he's not perfect, but he's also not the monster I was ready to brand him as either. I'm sorry but I cannot help but love Seth.
A throat cleared behind us, and then Apollo said, "Seriously, you two? It's not like you're keeping a god waiting or anything."
Even though I got that loving feeling back for Seth, the guy has nothing on Aiden St. Delphi. It's like every time I moved on to the next book in this series I would be blown away by how amazing and sweet and just wonderful this guy is. If he didn't show kinks in his armor every now and again I would honestly think this guy was too good to be true. I love how Alex and Aiden balance each other out and can read each other so well. There were so many Aiden and Alex feels. So. Many. Forbidden romance is one of my favorite tropes to read about. I loved how when people would give them dirty looks and openly stare Aiden would just squeeze her hand or something in a reassuring way and Alex would do something crazy pants like she is and flip them off. Gods I love Alex!
"We are!" Deacon shouted from inside the Expedition. "I've already got the first road game picked out, so freaking hurry!"
There are so, so many amazing characters to this series though. So many. The one who comes closest to the way I feel for Aiden and Alex is Aiden's younger brother Deacon. His nonstop energy and enthusiasm along with his charm and how freaking hilarious he is are just so endearing. I swear there must be something in the St. Delphi gene pool because there's just something about those boys. They're totally opposite for the most part, Aiden is the serious and responsible type whereas Deacon is the goofy and life of the party type. Both perfect in their own ways. Like I said though, there were so many amazing characters. Too many to go on and on about each one and I both love and hate when that happens. Having that many lovable characters makes it hard to accept that, in books like these, not everyone is going to make it to the end.
"And now it's happening again. We are going to war for you―for the gods. People will die. My friends and the people I love could die! I could die!"
This book wasn't exactly an easy one to read either. There is so much going on. I mean we're dealing with gods and war. It is intense and I was so freaked out for most of this book. I would be reading and even when nothing was happening...yet, my stomach would be a huge bundle of knots. I was dreading the possible chaos and death and destruction that could be every time I turned a page. I couldn't have been more on the edge of my seat. And that's the thing about paranormal/urban fantasy type books by JLA. She will bring you to the brink where everything is going to hell and characters will have to go to the extreme to try to put everything back together again. Things that have the potential to make the already intense and scary things go from bad to incredibly worse. Call me crazy, but I love feeling like that. Like, how could there possibly be hope? Because it makes the end results just that much sweeter.
The lopsided smile on Apollo's face spread. "Well, I would never kiss and tell."
The thing is though, it's not all fear and sadness and chaos. I'm always amazed by how much her books can make me laugh out loud. I'm not just talking some quiet little chuckle to myself. We're talking the kind that just bursts out of you. I love that just about every possible human emotion I could feel, I'm sure I felt when reading this series. There's this huge part of me that is kicking my own behind for taking so freaking long to put forth any effort to read it. I mean, I could have been feeling this bookish high a year ago! Oh well, at least I'm finally feeling it now. These feelings are something that aren't going to be going away any time soon.

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Hard not to take that personally.

And now he's back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn't taking that risk again.
