Fifteen-year-old Izzy
Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has
hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy's older sister vanishes without a
trace while on a job, Izzy's mom decides they need to take a break.
Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it's not as
normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local
high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate.
But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done.
For a tough girl who's always been on her own, it's strange to suddenly
make friends and maybe even have a crush. Can Izzy trust her new friends
to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get
hurt?
Rachel Hawkins' delightful spin-off brings the same wit and charm
as the New York Times best-selling Hex Hall series. Get ready for more
magic, mystery and romance!
So I gather this is a spinoff of the Hex Hall series, I realize the covers are the same design but I've seen plenty of authors whose covers all had similar themes (I've always loved these ones) but, anyway. I've only read the first book in the Hex Hall series at this point and if Izzy was in the first one I don't remember. It has been a long time since I've read it though. And it's not that I didn't want to finish the series I just, until now, haven't bought the other two books yet. Though I'm a bit more motivated to get on it after this!
I did find some of the dialogue in this book a bit cheesy and sort of, I don't know..awkward maybe...at times (if you've read this already or what have you I'm not talking about anything Torin says. I realize that's how he's supposed to talk.) More or less a few random phrases here or there that just felt out of place. But aside from that, the book was a lot of fun and there are some great characters in it. I immediately loved Dex. He's just so odd and quirky it's hard not to love him. And funny oh my lord is he funny. This spoils nothing but it just goes to show his humor:
"Bats live in caves," I reminded him. "And where there are bats, there's bat poop. Lots of it. Did you know there's a cave in Mexico where they have a whole mountain made of guano?"
Dex leveled a fake-sultry gaze at me. "Are you coming on to me?"
Seriously love that boy!
The end was a little bit, weird? Or unexpected maybe? Not sure how I felt about it. But all in all I enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I'd definitely like to find out what happens next for Izzy and Dex both. I found it very much worth the read!
A big thanks to Disney Hyperion and NetGalley for approving me for this!
I've been meaning to read the Hex Hall books for AGES! Too many books lol, not enough time. Wow what an insightful and helpful comment, I need tea! :) x
ReplyDeleteYeah I read the first one last year sometime I think..and I liked it I've just, like you, been very much in a too many books and not enough time sort of place and keep putting other books before finishing the series. I enjoyed it and I enjoyed the start of this one so we'll see how the rest turn out :)
